Sewing Success: Students Showcase Their Custom Burda Style Coats

Spring 2024 BurdaStyle Outerwear Certification Course Highlights

Our talented students from the Spring 2024 BurdaStyle Outerwear Certification Course have once again demonstrated their creativity, skill, and dedication through their beautifully crafted coats. With our Fall 2024 session approaching, it’s the perfect time to highlight their outstanding work, serving as a testament to what can be achieved with the right guidance and a passion for sewing. Creating your own outerwear is a significant milestone for any sewist, and BurdaStyle provides some of the most stylish, well-fitting patterns to enhance this rewarding experience.

Deborah’s Journey

Deborah tackled the challenge of making a coat for her 5’1” frame, facing obstacles such as performing a full bust adjustment (FBA) and resizing the pattern. Despite these difficulties, she found immense joy working with wool fabric, describing the experience as terrific. Her style is a mix of classic neutral and colourful, and she’s excited to make more coats, including a houndstooth wool blend with a spicy red lining.

Leslie’s Experience

Leslie faced unique challenges with a drop-shouldered loden coat, struggling to measure the pattern for the appropriate sleeve length. She opted to jump right into the project with wool, eventually achieving a better fit by trimming the shoulder and top of the sleeve. Leslie enjoyed learning different lining attachment methods, which she brilliantly executed. Her outerwear style varies with occasion, from a classic black and cream herringbone wool coat for formal events to a bright red waterproof raincoat for outdoor activities.

Melanie’s Accomplishments

Melanie’s primary challenge was perfecting the welt pocket for her trench coat, a task that tested her meticulous nature. However, she valued the learning process and techniques associated with sewing outerwear. With a preference for colourful fabrics and prints, Melanie plans to sew a winter coat using the Clare coat pattern and looks forward to making more vibrant and stylish outerwear.

Teresa’s Triumphs

Teresa faced the challenge of sourcing fabric online for her wool coat, eventually finding a reliable vendor. She enjoyed learning to sew new types of sleeves, which was a fresh experience for her. Typically wearing classic black coats, Teresa can now explore various colours while keeping costs low. Her upcoming projects include a red wool coat for Christmas and a reversible jacket for her sister-in-law, featuring distinct school colours for different occasions.

Looking Ahead: Fall 2024 Burda Style Certification

In the upcoming course, students will be guided through creating three different coats, versatile enough to form a capsule collection suitable for any occasion and weather. The Fall 2024 session begins on October 30th, offering another opportunity for aspiring sewists to refine their craft and create stylish outerwear.
