Origami Star Tutorial – Digitizing

Step 1: Insert Your Artwork

Insert your star origami artwork into your Doodler design space. Download the artwork if you haven’t done so already.

Step 2: Pathing the Design

Begin by using pathing to cover all lines, reducing the number of trims required. Digitize around the outside of the star first, then follow up with the inner straight lines using the running stitch and straight line tool.

Step 3: Satin Stitching

Digitize the outer and inner pentagram using a satin (steil) stitch set at 3 mm width with the straight-line tool.

Step 4: Applying Tatami Fill

Digitize a closed-fill object around the outer pentagram to secure the mylar film. Use a loose tatami fill.

Step 5: Adjusting Tatami Fill Settings

Modify the tatami fill to a spacing of 3 mm, set the "Traveling Route" to "Edge," and "Remove Underlay."

Step 6: Sequence Adjustment

Move the filled pentagram to the first position in your sequence so it stitches first. Congratulations! You’ve just created your very own digitized origami star design.

Origami Star Tutorial – Embroidering

Step 1: Hoop Your Stabilizer

Hoop your medium-weight tear-away stabilizer securely.

Step 2: Secure the Mylar

Lightly spray the stabilizer with temporary embroidery spray and place a piece of mylar in the hoop. To prevent sticky residue on your hoop, cover the sides with a paper towel.

Step 3: Secure the Mylar on the Back

Flip the hoop over and secure another piece of mylar on the back. You can use a contrasting colour for added effect. Firmly secure with tape if necessary.

Step 4: Embroider the Design

Place your hoop in the machine and start stitching your design.

Step 5: Detach the Stars

Once stitching is complete, remove the hoop from the machine and pop out the stars. Use scissors if needed.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Trim any frayed edges with scissors or use a flame to clean up.

Creating the 3D Origami Star

To fold your star, you’ll need to understand a “mountain” fold. Start by folding “mountains” on the right side of the star, creating the star’s points. Strengthen these folds by sharply creasing them. Continue folding back and forth to reinforce the creases, then flip the star over and make similar folds on the flat sides. When you flip it back, you’ll have a fabulous 3D sparkly star.

Creative Uses for Your Sparkly Project

These stars are perfect for upcoming Christmas decorations, including ornaments for your Christmas table or tree. You can experiment with variations like using patterned fabric on one side, fun fill-in designs, or textured paper for different effects.
